  • Question and Answers

  • Does the Breast Augmentation surgery leave scars?
Fortunately, this surgery allow us hiding the incisions which is very convenient in the first months. We´re going to describe some scars periods below to explain to you the healing evolution:
    • IMMEDIATE PERIOD: It lasts until the thirtyth day and it has an excelent aspect and less visible. Some cases react to the stitches or to the curatives.
    • MEDIATE PERIOD: From the thirtyth day until the twelfth month. There will be a natural scar enlargement during this period such as a change in its color tone, varying from red to brown that is going to get lighter. This period, the least favorable of the scar evolution, is the one that most worry patients. As we can´t hurry the natural healing process up, we recommend to the patients not to worry about it because will be in charge of reducing the scar vestiges.
    • LATE PERIOD: From the twelfth to the eighth month. In this period the scar is lighter and less consistent achieving ,in fact, the definitive result. Any evaluation about the definitive breast augmentation surgery result must be done after this period.
    Where are the scars placed?
Some surgeons make the incision between the breast and the chest, while others make it around the areola or even in the armpit. Since the first postoperative days you can use low neck clothes because scars are hidden. In time (check previous question), scars are being disguised, becoming almost invisible.
I´ve heard that some patients have too visible scars. Why does it happen?
Some patients tend to hypertrophic or keloid healing. However, this tendency can be foreseen in the first consultation when we ask you about your medical life such as family aspects that help a lot in the scar prognosis. Fair skin people almost don´t have healing complication. Dark skin people tend to develop keloid or hypertrophic scar. However this is not a rule. As we said, your medical history anylisis will help the scar prognosis.
Is there correction for the hypertrophic scars?
Several clinical and surgical resources allow us to improve the scars aestheticlly at the right time. The mediate period (from the thirty day to the twelfth month) must not be confused to a healing complication. Any doubts about your surgery evolution must be reported to your surgeon and not with someone else that like you is anxious about the final result.
How will my breast look like initially (size and consistence)?
Your breast can be enlarged through the surgery. Besides, we want to improve its consistence and shape through the surgery. In this case you can choose the new volume because we have several silicone sizes available to be implanted. We can use pre-shaped breasts (jelly) or inflatable (salty solution) that give us more aesthetic result options.
There´s harmony between the ideal breast volume and the chest size. Characteristics that must be kept during the surgery planning. After the surgery, breasts will pass through several evolutive periods:
    • IMEDIATE PERIOD: It lasts until the thirty day. Although breasts look better in this period, its shape and volume are not still the wanted result. Remember this: “YOUR BREAST WILL NOT BE PERFECT AFTER THE IMEDIATE POSTOPERATIVE”.
    • MEDIATE PERIOD: From the thirty day to the third month. Breasts tend to assume their definitive shape in this period. Different grades of swelling are characteristic from this period. Besides, the scar aspect is in transition (check previous item). Although patients are euphoric we tell them that this will be even better (late period).
    • LATE PERIOD: From the third to twelfth month. In this period, breasts assume their definitive aspect (scar, shape, consistence, volume, sensibility, etc).
    • It´s in this period that we usually take photos to compare them to the preoperative aspect of each patient. In the final result the breast skin elasticity and silicone breast implant volume are very important. The balance between them depends on each case.
When am I going to achieve the final result?
Although the imediate result is very good, only in the mentioned stage (late period) breast will assume their definitive shape.
What kind of bathing suit should I wear after the surgery?
In the imediate, mediate or late period you can use any kind of bathing suit, 1 or 2 pieces, as long as the higher piece isn´t too tight. Of course, after the scars maturation this choice is up to you.
In the next pregnancy, will the result remain the same or be damaged?
Your gynecologist will advise you about being or not being pregnant. The result will remain the same if your gynecologist controls your weight during the next pregnancy. Generally, there´s no problem because the breast augmentation surgery is done “out of breast tissue”.
Is the breast augmentation surgery postoperative painful?
Not generally. Unless you do not obey medical instructions specially about arms movements, physical efforts and others precautions in the first days. Some painful situations are softened with prescripted analgesics.
Are there risks during this surgery?
Serious complications are not usual during this surgery. This is due to the fact that each patient is suitably prepared. Besides, we evaluate the possibilities of using or not silicone prothesis and such as eventual complications.
What kind of anesthesia is used?
General, spinal or local anesthesia with attended sedation. It depends on the case..
How long does the surgery last?
About 120 to 150 minutes if it´s necessary.
How long does the internment period take?
From 12 to 24 hours (spinal anesthesia).
    Are curatives used?
Yes. Elastic and shaping curatives specially adapted to every kind of breast. They´re exchanged daily by the patient with no difficulty from the postoperative seventh day on.
    When are the stitches removed?
Generally until the postoperative seventh day.
When can I take a complete shower?
Generally after 7 days. Before that, you can almost take normal shower. Special precautions that will be taught by the nurse are needed.
    How is the postoperative evolution?
You must not forget that your breast will pass through different stages (check questions 1 and 5) until you achieve the wanted result. . Be patient because your organism will take care of everything. Of course, you must tell all your worries to the surgeon so he can give you necessary explanations or do his best to achieve the desired result.
When can I resume my normal physical activities?
Generally after 60 days with progressive activities.
    What is the capsule retraction?
It´s an exaggerated retraction of the organism fibrous capsule (which is formed around the prothesis ), establishing a certain grade of hardening of this region when it´s touched. In some cases this retraction can happen. However, if it happens in a stressed way, prothesis can and will be removed through the same incisions in a simple surgery using local anesthesia. Surgeon and patient can think of the possibility of reimplanting small prothesis or other way that fits better to each case. Capsule retraction is not related to unskilled surgeons but only an abnormal behavior of patients organism.
